Champion GB*Cleasanta Blackberry
Blackberry is a wonderful girl, whom we hadn’t planned on having at all-
Our friends Fiona and Ian Hermon of the Cleasanta cattery brought their lovely girl Cleasanta Summer over to be mated to Blue Boo in the spring of 2013. In due course, on the 3rd May 2013, a lovely litter of 4 kittens were born. Within a few days, Summer became very unwell and her milk dried up. It turned out that she had a dreadful infection of one of her mammary glands and had to have major surgery. Fortunately, she survived, but was unable to feed her babies. Fiona asked me if I could take the kittens and see if one of our girls could help to feed them-
The kittens arrived and Sparky and Betty were more than happy to take them on. But sadly, within a couple of days one of the boys had died and his litter sister followed a couple of days after that. I was so upset at losing them, and a bit mystified too. We were then left with a gorgeous Cream boy and his Black Tortie sister. They did well and put on weight and grew. Crème Brulee the Cream lad got to 8 weeks of age and suddenly became very unwell. I took him to the vet and we treated him for pneumonia. All weekend I syringed fluids into him, kept him warm and nursed him, but by Monday he was worse. Fiona said she’d like to know what was wrong, so with a very heavy heart and lots of tears, we made the decision to put him to sleep, and he was taken to the Royal Veterinary College for Post Mortem which showed lungs congested with pneumonia and pleurisy and major organ failure.
It was thought that the kittens had ingested milk tainted with their Mum’s infection as tiny babies. So, of course, then I worried constantly that little Blackberry was going to develop
